In Lesson of History exibition Joseph Backstein showed works by 20 Russian contemporary artists who are the most significant and emblematic for Russia’s contemporary art scene.

History, both personal and global, or better yet, the reflection on history, as well as the contemplation and interpretation of historical events, and finally, nostalgia — is a constant theme in Russian art. “The work of these artists over the past 10 years often reflects the cultural-historical, social and political circumstances of the period in which they were created,” said Joseph Backstein, the exhibition’s curator. “It is precisely these works that relate to various historical periods, and which in essence are their reflection, that interested me in the framework of this project.”
