January issue: Cool and Noteworthy
We return with our annual review of photographic highlights – the people and projects we most enjoyed this year, but for one reason or another didn’t make one of our 2018 editions.
Among this year’s noteworthies is 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, the first African American to shoot the cover for American Vogue. We cover Kensuke Koike’s much-anticipated new book, a collaboration with Thomas Sauvin of Beijing Silvermine. Other highlights include Pixy Liao’s Experimental Relationship, an exploration of gender roles, and Feng Li’s intriguing fashion editorial for System magazine.
It’s not all bright young things. We also recognise two noteworthy exhibitions at Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto: Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography and The Flávio Story, which explores the impact and repercussions of a Gordon Parks photo essay, featured in Life in 1961. We cover Steidl’s scholarly anthology devoted to August Sander’s lifework, People of the 20th Century. And Pete Brook reports on a dynamic exhibition about the San Quentin State Prison.
Other noteworthies are projects that raise awareness about contemporary issues, such as The Gaia Foundation’s global photography initiative, We Feed The World. Elsewhere, we feature Carmen Winant’s taboo-busting My Birth; Project Pressure’s latest photographic collab highlighting global warming; and Patrick Willocq’s work on refugees.
